Eléa Candente

Èlea is olive tree in ancient Greek. This work is about the passage in which Odysseus and his companions prepare the weapon to blind Polyphemus, after having gotten him drunk. In this painting, Ulysses is at the bottom of the painting, highlighting his look at Polyphemus and the thought that comes out of the central part of his head, that is, the rational one. It is worth highlighting Oliveira’s two saffron bars, which represent the hero’s defense against the monster.

Whispers is the moment when Odysseus tells his companions the trap he is going to prepare for Polyphemus. In this image, elegance and simplicity stand out, there are almost no textures, only in the main eye.

Eco na Ilha

Echo on the island, here is represented the moment in which Polyphemus asks for help from the rest of the island’s Cyclopes once he was attacked by Ulysses (Odysseus), highlighting again the representation of a slightly bucolic animal with a large eye and beneath it the rest of the Cyclopes, with the typical geopolitical texture, once again representing their nomadic movement.

A Gesta de Olissipo

“The gesture of Olissipo”, represents the city of Lisbon, so named in Roman times, but which has its origins in one of Ulysses’ journeys when he arrived in Ophiusa, an adventure that gave rise to the seven/eight hills of the capital, which rise from the city itself. queen- half-serpent, half-woman- Ophiussa’s pursuit of Ulysses when she failed to reach him, her multiple serpent arms became the city’s hills, an evocation of this founding myth. There are also other symbols that mention the city as the fetus. at the top, which means birth, and the sardine in the cyclops’ eye, one of the city’s great icons.

Nas paredes do Estômago

“On the walls of the stomach” represents the moment in which Polyphemus swallows some of Ulysses’ companions. It highlights the central dark stain where the Chinese ink seems to scratch the monster’s walls, representing the despair of the new tenants.

Ilhas Urânicas

“Uranic Islands”, in this painting represents the moment in which the Cyclops Brontes frees himself from the land Gaia, the prison to which Uranus had subjected his children. The work is divided into two large areas, in the lower part Gaia is represented, as an icon of the cage, here once again the earth is represented as a political map, managing to represent the nomadic movement with these textures and in the upper part is the moment in which Brontes frees himself from his mother, making a call to attention in the central circle, a symbol of the union between the Cyclops and his mother.

“Workers of Hephaestus”, represents the Cyclopes builders who, in Alexandrian poetry, are considered subordinate geniuses, blacksmiths and artisans of all the weapons of the gods. The arms that come out of the belly stand out in the image.

Movimentos Nómadas

“Nomadic movements” highlight the wide variety of colours created by the tannins in this piece, in addition to the sinuous movement of the stains, thus representing constant movement. This reflects the Cyclopes’ nomadic nature, as they were dedicated to herding animals and therefore considered wanderers, acknowledging their irrational mindset, as they did not master agriculture and were regarded as lawless and stateless beings.
